Brighten Your Beds This Winter With Fresh Mulch

Brad Magee • Dec 20, 2019

Winter can be a dreary time of the year in south Louisiana.  Overcast skies, earlier sunsets, and periods of wet, windy weather can quickly turn your vibrant landscaping into a bleak assortment of flowers, plants, and washed away mulch.  However you can add a little pop to brighten up these winter months by adding new mulch.  Once the leaves have fallen you can quickly and easily freshen up your flowerbeds and other landscaped areas, there's no reason to wait until spring.  Here are a few benefits that fresh mulch offers.

Mulch helps to prevent weeds by restricting their access to sunlight.  These means you can spend less time pulling weeds, and more time enjoying your beautiful landscaping.  The clay-laden soil that is common in south Louisiana can also be enhanced by fresh mulch.  Because mulch attracts earthworms by bringing them to the soil surface to feed, the actually aerate clay soil.  Soils of all types benefit as the organic elements of mulch breakdown.

One to four inches of mulch evenly spread throughout your flowerbeds is an ideal amount.  Too much mulch can lead to varying plant diseases and fungus.  Adding mulch during the cooler winter months helps to insulate your plants and their root systems. This is very beneficial for young, developing plants and flowers.
